Ruthin 1 Glantraeth 2

It was a case of 'After the Lord Mayors show' for Ruthin following their stirring win last week Ruthin just didn't turn up against Glantraeth. They started reasonably well but a continuation of a thigh injury caused Martin Plant to be replaced by Matthew Davies after 10 minutes. Both sides threatened very little in a dull first half. At half time Ruthin were given a good talking to but to no avail. The second half continued in the same vain, on 55 mins Glantraeth were gifted a goal at the far post following poor defending by Ruthin, again on 75 mins Glantraeth took a 2 nil lead against a listless Ruthin a tame looking shot going past Jez Porter very easily. Ruthin pushed Si Holloway upfront with 15 mins to go and this caused a bit of activity Gary Ellison being flagged offside twice when clear on goal it was suggested to the assistant referee he read up on the offside rule!! All too late Ruthin came to life with Si Holloway heading in following a corner but this was the last activity of the game. Nobody to pick out from a poor performance by the whole Ruthin team, they will have to pick their socks up next week as they are away to Lex with Ruthins league position very unsatisfactory.

Ruthin 3 Guilfield 0

Ruthin move into the quarter finals of the League Cup with a convincing display against a strong Guilsfield outfit who since a 3 all draw in the league at Ruthin have won 8 on the bounce that included Bala, Prestatyn and Premier side Airbus. Ruthin started strongly keeping the ball on the ground and playing some very good football. On 15 minutes Dave Holloway was at hand to finish off a flowing move with a good finish from 15 yards. Ruthin continued to knock the ball around with Guilsfield chasing shadows, on the half hour mark following great work on the right hand side including Liam Jones, Will Roberts and Si Holloway, Gary Ellison had two great efforts blocked but the poacher Dave Holloway steered the third attempt in. The second half started with the Guils throwing caution to the wind and putting 6 men up front. The game became a bit ragged at times but 5 minutes into the half Garmon Rhys put in an inch perfect ball from the left for Gary Ellison to take a great first touch and then steer the ball past the keeper with a great flick with the outside of his right foot. At 3 nil Guilsfield continued to battle and push playes upfront. On 70 minutes the very competent Llyr Williams made a good save from a free kick but as Ruthin intoduced Garmon Hafal,  Aled Roberts and Matthew Davies from the bench they began to dominate once more. There were good performances all round from Ruthin and they will be hoping this form continues into the League games in the next few weeks. Match Ball sponsor L & J Tyres.

Denbigh 1 Ruthin 1 - Ruthins midfield dynamo Mark(Chisle) Entwhistle in blue ready to pounce!!

Vale Derby Fails to Ignite

A nail-biting 1-1 draw in a tense encounter ensured that local bragging rights were shared between Denbigh and Ruthin this week, writes Peter Glynn at Central Park.

Local derbys tend to be either fiery or dour and drab affairs. This falls somewhere between the two , with the contest more or less over after the first quarter of the game , which provided the goal action and most of the enterprising play.

The visitors were quick off the mark ,  with former Bangor City youngster Gary Ellison popping up in the home box on 2 minutes to fire just wide of a post , with the Denbigh defence looking at each other for an explanation.

Dyer's men settled into a pattern and a Ryan Harden ball fed Luke O'Mahoney who went on a strong gallop , before crossing into the box - but Ruthin's keeper Jeremy Porter was happy to see the ball bypassing the incoming Denbigh forwards with his defence backpedalling.

But Porter was less happy on the quarter on an hour mark when a Burgess pinpointer of a free kick picked out big Tony Davies at the far post , and the central defender sent a firm header into the far corner to inch the Central Park side ahead.

Eddy pic

The Ruths responded well and turned up the pressure and their leveller on 25 minutes was a mixture of poor defending and good finishing. It was the useful Gary Ellison who pounced on some hesitation in the Denbigh box and the 18 year old smashed home from eight yards to give his side parity.

Both sides now glared at each other for a while, and with both teams looking comfortable on the ball without really threatening their opponent's onion bag, one wondered if another goal would arrive. A wicked Adam Jones cross into the visitor's box could have brought some reward but more superb work by Jez Porter and Rob Render prevented a strike from locomotive Lundstram who was steaming in at the far stick.

Home manager Dyer added Tommy Harrison at the half time break for Denbigh engine Paul Edwards who had limped off, but it was Ruthin who started the second stanza in the ascendancy , with the dangerous Simon Holloway in despair to see his fine shot edge wide with host's keeper Hulse nowhere.

More midfield inaction ensued as the game began to peter out , though Denbigh's Harrison tested Porter with a quality cross and the Ruthin glovesman was then at his very best to hold onto a powerful Luke O'Mahoney effort towards the end of proceedings.

Ruthin Town 3 Bodedern 0

Ruthin came away with an important three points aginst bottom of the
table Bodedern on Saturday to record their third win of the season.
Ruthin started brightly and should of taken the lead when debtant Simon
Holloway failed to hit the target with a header following a fine cross
from Liam Jones.  Holloway was not to be denied however, and made amends
on 10 minutes with a fine strike after cutting in from the edge of the
box.

Ruthin continued to dominate the remainder of the half but despite
creating several chances went into the interval with a one goal
advantage.   Bodedern improved after the interval and should of
equalized in the 57th minute but for an excellent block by the
impressive Wil Roberts.  The introduction of Garmon Hafal for the hard
working Matthew Davies gave the home side fresh impetus, and it was
Hafal  who helped Town to increase their lead on the 65 th minute,
following a fine passing movement which Liam Jones finished with an
excellent shot from the edge of the box. Ruthin continued to dominate
with Hafal running at the Bodedern defence at every opportunity. He got
his deserved goal in the 88th minute following excellent build up play
down Ruthin's left side, finding the left hand corner of the goal with a
sublime finish.  This was an important win for Ruthin who dominated
throughout with an excellent team performance.  They travel to Denbigh
this week for what should be a cracking Vale of Clwyd derby.

Summary.
First team : Buzz
Over the last few weeks the first team have had a tough time of it following the defeat at Bala they lost at Halkyn and Buckley and again yesterday at home to Flint, nobody said it was going to be easy! Yesterday was more encouraging with a narrow defeat to Flint that showed a more solid team formation and the team more than deserved something out of the game. We are in the process of signing Simon Holloway from Buckley and have another few irons in the fire. On the nonavailability/injury front Aled Roberts will be available in 2 weeks time, Dafydd Jones is making steady progress but is still a few weeks away, Tryfan is 3/4 weeks away, gaz Martin is still 5+ weeks away, and Dewi looks like a few weeks away as well. Oh to have a full squad to pick from, over the next few weeks we will have a stronger squad and we feel we will progress.

Also great to welcome back Mark (Chisle) Entwhistle from injury watching him cover every blade of grass on the pitch it is easy to forget that he has only had a couple of games under his belt and will improve again as he builds up his match fitness.

By contrast the reserves have had a great run of 3 straight wins well done to Sion and new assistant manager Mark Roberts.

The Colts are improving we will be signing the current under 16s team as they reach their 16th birthdays and fully intend to utilise them in the senior teams in future.

Saturday September 29th

RuthinTown 0 Flint Town 1

Ruthin looking far more solid with Will Roberts excelling at right back should have had at least a point out of this one. Flints keeper was man of the match pulling off a number of excellent saves particularly twice from a Garmon Hafal chip in the first half and a header from the same player in the second half. Flints goal was a well worked move on 44 minutes it has to said it was probably their second or third attack in the first half. Ruthins attitude was excellent if they carry on in this fashion results will improve soon. Well done to Rob Render who was solid in the centre of defence but knows he needs to maintain a high standard to retain his place, if everybody at the club had Rob's attitude we would improve very quickly.

Saturday September 22nd

Buckley 3 Ruthin Town 0

We were easily Buckleys equal throughout the match but a couple of defensive blunders mixed with poor finishing makes it look like a heavily one sided affair which it wasnt.

Saturday September 15th

Halkyn 2 Ruthin Town 1

A poor display by an under strength team outmuscled by a strong Halkyn team. Tryfan was injured on 20 mins, 1 down on 40 mins, 1 all after 50 mins missed a pen after 65 mins, 21 down following another poor goal after 78 mins. One to forget quickly!

Wednesday September 4th

Bala 5      Ruthin Town 0

This was literally men against boys, a very young Ruthin side were taught a lesson by a strong, skilfull ad experienced Bala. Ruthin could therefore ill afford the loss of Tryfan Prosser and Aled Roberts prior to the game. As usual Ruthin put their all into the game but just couldn't compete with Bala. Bala scored their first in the 20th minute and their second just prior to half time. Ruthin improved during the early stages of the second half but conceded a very sloppy third goal from there on the strength of the Bala squad proved too much as they went on to score two more. We have taken this as lessons learned and the Ruthin squad now know what it takes to get to the top of the CA. It has to be borne in mind that Bala have been together for 2 seasons and have strengthened each season, Ruthin have been together for a number of weeks therefore don't need to be downhearted by this but inspired to improve.

Saturday September 1st

Penley 2      Ruthin Reserves 0

We should of had the game won in the first half, insted we went into half time two nil down. We started the game off at a quick tempo with tanner and meilir bossing the middle of midfield and Elgan and Garnner causing the Penley defence a lot of trouble. Within in the first 5 minutes Garner had hit the post and the rebound just dropped behind Elgan. We should of had to definate penalties with two fouls on Garmon. Penley broke on thirty minutes with there first attack and scored with a weak shot going through Martin's hands and two minutes later they broke again with a long ball into the box and the striker had a free header. We still created chances with Rob Render going through one on one only to be denied by the keeper. The second half came and went, we had plenty of possesion but our final ball and finish was very poor. The couple of plus's which came out of the game were the performances of Justin and Rob who both but in a solid performance and also the football we played in the first half.

Saturday September 1st

Ruthin Town 3 Penrhyncoch 0

An impressive first half performance provided the basis for this important victory for Ruthin over their mid-Wales opponents at the Memorial Playingfields on Saturday. Ruthin started very brightly on the excellent playing surface, with the midfield quartet of Matty Davies, Liam Jones, Garmon Rhys and Gareth Martin taking firm control of the early exchanges.  Ruthin took the lead on eight minutes through a penalty following a rash challenge on Ruthin's Tryfan Prosser, Liam jones converting.  Within a minute however, Penrhyncoch had the opportunity to equalize following a mistimed challenge by Ruthin defender Aled Roberets.  Jeremy Porter in the Ruthin goal however was up to the challenge and made an excellent stop.  This stirred Ruthin and they proceeded to dominate proceedings for the rest of the half with some excellent passing and movement. Ruthin's second came on 37 minutes when an excellent passing movement involving Liam Jones and Dave Holloway put Tryfan Prosser through who finished in style. But for some wayward finishing and some last-ditch defending Ruthin could of gone into the interval with a few more goals to the good.  In comparison the second half was a fairly quiet affair.  The highlight for Ruthin being Dave Holloway's fifth goal in the last three matches with an excellent header from a Liam Jones corner.  Injury-hit Pentrhyncoch improved slightly after the break but the back four of Mike Sharples, Tom Wilcox-Jones and ALed Roberts - excellently marshalled by Edwart Jones limited any goal scoring opportunities for the visitors to the minimum

Wednesday 29th August

Ruthin 3 Guilsfield 3
This was back to the Rutin of old, dictating the game and leaking goals as soon as they go ahead Dave Holloway scored a great hatrick to put Ruthin in front 3 times but each time they were pegged back each time from a set piece!

Saturday 25th August

Queens Park 3 Ruthin 1
A depleted Ruthinn side battled well against a strong QP outfit, once again Ruthin leaked a goal in the first few minutes. QP had the better of the remainder of the half and on half time went 2 nil up. Ruthin played their best football in the second half and pressed to get back in the game QP broke upfield on 65 minutes and following a clear push on Mike Sharples went on to score a dubious third Ruthin still refused to buckle however and piled pressure on QP they were rewarded in the 78th minute with a goal from Dave Holloway, a QP defender was sent off on 84 mins after pulling Tryfan Prosser back when he was through on goal. Ruthin pressed further but couldn't break through.
In hindsight Ruthin showed QP too much respect and the battling qualities this side is showing will serve us well this season.

Wednesday August 22nd 2007

CA - Llandyrnog 2 Ruthin 3.

This local Derby rarely fails to produce excitement and lots of goals this was no exception. Playing down the slope in the first half Llandyrnog had the edge a number of ex Llandyrnog Ruthin players looked too excited and lost concentration. Dyrni knocked long balls at the Ruthin defence for Jon Slater to cause havoc, Eddy Jones and Dewi Roberts held up well to the onslaught but on 30 mins a loose ball from a corner was crossed in for Mike Bryan Jones to head in for Dyrni.
Half time 1 - 0
After a few stern words about discipline and doing the basics right Ruthin came out in a determined mood and dictated the early second half action getting behind the Dyrni defence frequently. In Dyrni's first real attack they went 2 nil up on 65 minutes through Neal Hughes. Ruthin responded immediately and from a free kick Mike Sharples appeared from nowhere to head in this got Ruthin motivated and they searched for an equaliser Liam Jones was the victim of a horrendous tackle in the box and the referee had no choice but to give a penalty from which he scored.
On 85 mins a high bouncing ball was volleyed in expertly from 30 yards by Tryfan Prosser for a great goal and much excitement.

Quality was in short supply during this game but Ruthins spirit was excellent and will be required again during what will be a tough season.

Ruthin - Jez Porter, Mike Sharples, Edwart Jones, Dewi Roberts, John Jones, Gaz Martin, Liam Jones, Aled Roberts, Alex Hodge, Will Roberts, Tryfan Prosser, Dave Holloway, Garmon Rhys, Andrew McHugh, Tom Wilcox-Jones, Martin Dyer.

Saturday August 18th 2007

CA - Prestatyn 5 Ruthin 1.

Considering the result this was a surprisingly even match throughout with Ruthin playing some good football and showing a good spirit, the major difference was the sharpness of Prestatyn's forward players. Ruthin conceded the first goal within 3 minutes which threw out their plans to hold out and gradually get into the game. Late in the first half Prestatyn got a penalty to make it 2 nil half time.
Ruthin's best spell came after the break they matched Prestatyn for long periods, Ruthin brought on Dave Holloway upfront to look to get a goal back. Unfortunately within 30 secs of his introduction Prestatyn were awarded another penalty Bowes making it 3 nil, Ruthin tired in teh closing stages but didn't stop completing Prestatyn grabbed another goal on 80 mins. Ruthin continued to compete and were rewarded with a goal from Gareth Martin towards the end Prestatyn got their fifth.

Ruthin - Jez Porter, Mike Sharples, Edwart Jones, Dewi Roberts, Garmon Rhys, Gaz Martin, Liam Jones, Aled Roberts, Alex Hodge, Will Roberts, Tryfan Prosser, Dave Holloway, Garmon Hafal, Rob Render, Tom Wilcox-Jones.

WNL Div 1    Brynteg 6 Ruthin Res 6

In an exciting encounter Ruthin earned a point by scoring 6 goals well done to the strike force maybe a bit of work required at the back!!!!!

WNL Div 2    Brickfield 0 Ruthin Colts 17

The Colts turned up played against 10 men scored lots of goals and learnt nothing. It is expected next weeks match will be more competitive.
